What is hair porosity?

Hair porosity indicates the hair's ability to absorb nutrients. The strands contain cuticles that protect and absorb water and nutrients needed by the hair fiber. However, due to external factors, cuticles can close or open too much, which prevents strands from absorbing enough nutrients.

Types of hair porosity:

Low porosity: hair with low porosity has tightly closed cuticles, which makes it difficult to absorb nutrients and water in the hair, resulting in dry and hard hair.

Normal porosity: healthy hair, on the other hand, has a balanced porosity, as the cuticles of the strands are half open. Thus, the hair can absorb the necessary nutrients for the hair fiber.

High porosity: Weak, brittle and dull strands are a sign of high porosity hair. This is because the cuticles are too open, so the strands cannot contain the nutrients needed for the hair fiber.

Why does hair become porous?

Several external factors can cause porosity, mainly procedures that change the pH of the hair, which directly interferes with the opening of the cuticles.

However, exposure to the sun, repeated use of flat irons and dryers and chemical treatments are the main causes of hair porosity.
